The Bailiwick Big Picture Curriculum has been written with a view to prepare the children and young people of our islands for the opportunities and challenges of living in the 21st century.

All children and young people should have the same opportunities and entitlement. We want our young people to grow into healthy, successful adults. They will know about their islands and the big wide world and learn the skills to manage their own lives. This will enable them to gradually understand the world of work.

Children also need to be ready for tests and examinations both at school and in later life. The Big Picture Curriculum helps schools to plan to achieve all of these things.

The curriculum has been written to flow from age 5 to 19. Increased emphasis is placed on meaningful and purposeful learning across subject areas, skills development and personal achievement.

There will be a bigger focus on:

  • taking learning outside the classroom
  • promoting positive mental health and well-being
  • understanding the world of work and and the life skills linked to managing money
  • the understanding of other cultures and their languages from a younger age (Year 1)
  • whilst recognising that the skills of communication (including reading, writing and speaking and listening), numeracy and digital empowerment play a central role in all that the children do and will be integral to all aspects of learning.
